SOUTH AFRICAN VERSION OF BURNING MAN – BURN AFRICA 2012, APRIL 25 – 30

AfrikaBurn is the spectacular result of the creative expression of a community of volunteers who, once a year, gather in the Tankwa Karoo to create a temporary city of art, theme camps, costume, music and performance! For those that have been no explanation is necessary, for those that haven’t none is possible.

AfrikaBurn is a participant-created movement, an experiment in inclusive community building, decommodification, creativity, self-reliance and radical self-expression. It is a chance to invent the world anew. The theme this year is MIRAGE – submitted by Mariella Rossi.

Mirage – a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays are bent to produce an illusion of water, people, or objects.
What is there? What is real? And what is pure imagination?
Is this a mirror of ourselves?
A shimmering reflection. Temporary, transient.
We gather on that lively line where the hot earth meets an aloof sky, and this is where we dance, sing, rejoice.
But come quick, for if you wait too long, by the time you get there, we may be gone.
