INVEST IN SOUTH AFRICAN ART Part 2

Arguably the most important Freida Lock to come on to the open market in recent history is Interior with Green Hat. Painted in 1949,

this work is very much a portrait of the artist despite her not being physically present in the composition. Lock references her travels to Zanzibar with the inclusion of the paintings hanging on the walls of her bedroom as well as her sea-green hat caught of the top rail of the chair in the foreground.

Stephan Welz and Company  Works from the collection of the Late Mrs Jean Bernadt form an integral part of this auction and include works by prominent members of the new Group including Freida Lock, May Hillhouse and Lippy Lipshitz.

“Freida spent approximately 18 months travelling in Zanzibar and Lamu and many of her paintings from this time were framed with strips of the ornately carved door-frames from the region. This landed her in hot water upon her return to South Africa as she found herself at odds with Irma Stern who claimed authorship over this means of framing,” says Phillippa Duncan, Head of the Cape Town Paintings department.

In Freida’s diaries from her travels are many black and white photographs documenting her trip- here the subject of one of her paintings is shown posing with the finished work. This painting is of course seen hanging on the right hand wall of the interior composition, continues Duncan.

Other works from the Late Jean Bernadt Collection include important sculptures by Lippy Lipschitz. Africa and Prophetess were both widely exhibited during the artist’s lifetime and represent some of the finest works by Lipshitz to come under the hammer at auction.
