“I am enormously proud of Peter and the Bouchard Finlayson wines, which can stand tall amongst their peers in the world,” says Bouchard Finlayson owner Victoria Tollman. “It is wonderful to have competitions such as these to reaffirm our belief in what we do – which is to have the best people to make the best possible wines from the healthiest grapes. Our commitment to quality over quantity remains our priority.”

Last year, Bouchard Finlayson received the Trophy for the Wine of the Year, having headed the 96+ Club list with a score of 97.5% for the Galpin Peak Pinot noir.

This year, the Bouchard Finlayson Galpin Peak Pinot noir won a SAWI Platinum award with a perfect score of 100 and another two wines -

Bouchard Finlayson Galpin Peak Pinot noir
the Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal and the Bouchard Finlayson Kaaimansgat Chardonnay – joining the 96+ club, at 99.20 and 97.63 respectively.” Excerpts from Wine Cellar by: Roland Peens

Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal
Bouchard Finlayson Kaaimansgat Chardonna
Galpin Peak Pinot noir
A wine inspired by their winemaker and location - offering a true reflection of their terroir. Barrel matured for 10 months in French oak, rich with luscious soft tannins and dark-coloured forest fruits, deftly balanced on a cord of lingering plum and raspberry delights.

Hannibal 2010
An Italian/French inspired blend of Sangiovese, Pinot noir, Nebbiolo, Shiraz, Mouvedré and Barbera. Matured for 16 months in French oak, red cherry, flowers, a whiff of truffle on the nose with a hint of spice. Tannins are velvety and offer a slow-pronounced aromatic finish!

Kaaimansgat Limited Edition Chardonnay
An innovative blend of a classic barrel-fermented portion of Chardonnay (60%) with a fruity non malo unwooded portion (40%). The barrel fermented portion is all new French oak! The style is classic, cool climate Chardonnay with voluptuous fruit tones layered on harmonious
oak flavours, all balanced in a synonymous elegance. Kaaimansgat Chardonnay also was awarded 91 points out of a 100 in the Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

HERMANUSPIETERSFONTEIN WINES AND COTTAGES

In the early 1800’s farmers in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley felt their children should rather be schooled in Dutch, forerunner of Afrikaans. Oftentimes they only remunerated farm teacher, Hermanus Pieters, in sheep, which he would graze at a spring under Milkwood trees near the sea. In l855, long after his passing, the village Hermanuspietersfontein was founded in his honour. In the early 1900’s the postmaster shortened the village name to Hermanus. In order to commemorate this teacher and the spirit of the people of 1855, Hermanuspietersfontein is committed naming all their wines and labels in Afrikaans – the only cellar in South Africa to do so.

LA VIERGE WINES AND RESTAURANT

La Vierge Restaurant and Tasting Room

French for "The Virgin" with quirky labels like;

THE LAST TEMPTATION Riesling 2010
JEZEBELLE Chardonnay 2010
ORIGINAL SIN Sauvignon Blanc 2010
TEMPTATION The Affair 2008 (Shiraz, Barbera)
NYMPHOMANE 2010

I enjoyed just being at La Vierge, sitting outside on the veranda overlooking the valley and loved the trendy design.  It was quite refreshing to be in a tasting room/restaurant that looked and felt completely different from the more traditional tasting rooms one has become so use to, on the Western Cape’s wine routes.
