The ethos behind Okapi is to produce luxurious, artisanal accessories handmade entirely in Africa, creating job opportunities and growth while striving for exceptional quality and an understated, timeless appeal.  The brand was conceptualised by its South African founder Hanneli Rupert in July 2008.  She was working as a painter in Europe at the time and moved back to Africa to make the idea a reality.

Hanneli draws inspiration for her designs from the mystical traditions of Africa and its
primordial beauty. In keeping with this fascination, she also opened the African concept
store Merchants on Long in downtown Cape Town in October 2010.

Okapi was named after the Central African antelope so exotic it was once believed to
be mythical and has long been referred to as the “African unicorn”.
Every element of an Okapi bag is entirely traceable, sustainable and ethically sourced.
80-90% of the material used in bags and their packaging is sourced in Africa and we
aim to make this 100% in the next few years.
